£20m refurnishment almost complete
The £20m refurbishment of Glasgow's beloved Central Station
hotel is almost complete and is set to re-open later this month at
the Grand Central Hotel.
Principal Hayley acquired the historic Glasgow landmark in
spring 2009 and is currently adding the finishing touches to the
350,000sq ft space. Designed by Charles Leon, the hotel has been
stripped back to basics, uncovering many of its original features
including marble floors and intricate cornicing which have been
brought back to life by Principal Hayley's team of experts.
As part of restoration, Principal Hayley has reinstated the
ballroom's original coffered ceiling, raising it by 3 metres to
unveil a second set of windows which have been hidden for the past
three decades.
General Manager Laurie Nicol said:
"The refurbishment is almost complete and it's been great seeing
it coming together over the past few months. The building holds a
very special place in the people of Glasgow's hearts and minds - it
really is ‘Glasgow's hotel' - and we have made sure that the design
is sympathetic to its grand history. Steeped in a rich and
glamorous tale, from John Logie Baird transmitting the first
television pictures in 1927 to visits from Cary Grant, John F
Kennedy and even the Queen - there's no hotel quite like it in the
city. It truly is unique and my team and I are fully committed to
ensuring it once again becomes the best loved hotel in
Glasgow."
The hotel, when it re-opens in autumn, will have 186 fully
refurbished bedrooms, 21 flexible meeting rooms including the Grand
Room of Glasgow and a lavish champagne bar overlooking Central
Station's concourse.
Dating back to 1883, the Grand Central Hotel has an illustrious
history of attracting high profile guests including Cary Grant,
Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Laurel and Hardy, the Queen, Sir Winston
Churchill and John F Kennedy.
